A4 PORTFOLIO & ANALYSIS
● Develop sustainable textiles over six weeks
● Create physical textile samples
● Maintain a detailed process portfolio
● Analyze technologies and sustainability practices
● Speculate on potential real-world applications
Suggested structure:
I. Shape shifting
II. Bio-materials
1. Bioplastics
2. Kombucha
III. Felting
1. Nuno felting
2. 3D wet felting
IV. Natural dyeing & Botanical printing
1. Natural dyeing
2. Botanical printing
V. Bio gelli plate printing
VI. Zero waste experiments
For each part, you will follow the exact same structure:
● Working process:
○ Write the steps to describe your working process with clear images
○ You can also provide formulas for calculating the exact size of the product
● Reflection (200-300 words):
○ Analyze how you feel, what was the positive and negative of the experience, what did not go according to plan, what you did, how can you improve it, what did you learn, how can you apply it in the future,... (support your reflection with images)
Example:
The workshop involved creating and watching the growth of SCOBY, a type of leather made from shredded tea leaves. The workshop was interesting, but the smell was unpleasant due to its large size and long time. The first SCOBY had a rough surface and dark underside due to long exposure to tea, while the second grew faster and whiter. After being steeped in butterfly pea flower tea, the SCOBY became beautiful and dark. The 1-week SCOBY dried quickly, while the 2-week SCOBY was wrinkled. The workshop taught the creation of bio leather, an environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic leather. If the workshop were to be repeated, the participant would use a clear container, filter the tea leaves, and harvest the SCOBY immediately.
● Applications & sustainable practices (what are the sustainable practices, examples of people who’ve done the techniques):
○ Shape shifting: Shape-shifting in fashion alters fabric form, enhancing three-dimensional appearance, with pleating being a popular application. Sustainability lies in utilizing the entire fabric and reducing wastage.
